Five New Years’ Resolutions For Your Dream Smile!

December 12, 2022 by Gabe

There’s no better time than the present to improve the way that you care for your teeth, and the New Year is as good a time as any! While New Years’ resolutions are often difficult to keep, here are five dental resolutions that will help you achieve your dream smile in 2023 without causing a great deal of hardship!

Commit to flossing

We all know that we’re supposed to floss every day, but it’s one of those activities that is a little tiresome, and it can extend the amount of time spent in the bathroom every morning. However, flossing regularly can truly work wonders for your teeth. By flossing every morning or evening, you reduce your risk of gum disease and tooth decay and also achieve fresher breath. If you’re struggling to floss every day for whatever reason, begin by increasing its regularity to every 2-3 days, working your way to daily flossing within a month or so. Honestly, flossing makes a huge difference to your teeth!

Increase your calcium intake

You’re probably aware that your calcium intake is linked to the health of your pearly whites. After all, we’ve all encouraged our kids to drink their milk for healthy teeth! Calcium is key for keeping the roots of your teeth strong, ensuring they stay rooted in your gums. Thankfully, there are lots of sources of calcium, and we don’t need to be pressed to include the likes of milk, cheese, and yogurt in our diets. So, be kind to the roots of your teeth by ensuring that you have sufficient levels of calcium in your diet this new year.

Think about your sugar consumption

Sugar-laden fizzy drinks, sweets, and chocolate might taste delicious, but they’re really bad for your teeth. If you have a sweet tooth, the good news is that there are lots of sugar-free alternatives that you can turn to in order to get your fix. Of course, diet sodas are an easy choice, but there are even sugar-free candies and chocolates that you can enjoy to limit your sugar consumption. Sugar is so bad for your teeth because it leads to decay, so the more you can reduce your sugar intake, the healthier your teeth will be.

Stay hydrated

Lots of people don’t realise that hydration is incredibly important for oral health. If you don’t drink enough water, your mouth is more likely to dry out. As a result, it can increase your risk of cavities and makes halitosis (bad breath) even more likely. So, if you don’t drink enough water (3.7 litres for men and 2.7 litres for women), invest in a water bottle that you can fill up regularly throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Visit the dentist and hygienist regularly

Instead of visiting the dentist when you have a problem with your teeth or gums, it’s important to proactively plan your trips to see the dentist. Arranging a checkup twice a year is ideal, and you can visit the hygienist in between checkups to ensure that your teeth are in great shape. If you’re looking to switch to a professional, family-friendly dentist in London, get in touch with the friendly team at Pure Smiles today to book an initial consultation.
